Treaty Grounds Matariki Visit

Te Moana walked to the Treaty Grounds with all the other students from Paihia School. We were involved in a variety of activities related to Matariki, our Maori New Year. We began by playing some games to improve our co-ordination, collaboration and communication in both silent and verbal ways of communicating. We really had to listen to the natural sound very carefully. we then planted some Native trees in the Native Bush at the Treaty Grounds. What a privilege-we hope to revisit in 10, 20, 30 or more years time and be able to see our trees that we planted to share with our Nation. Afterwards we wove some nikau to create some kites which we had had fun flying freely through the air with the most amazing background.

Matariki Whanau Day 2017

Te Moana began their Matariki Day at the beach at Paihia and were ever so fortunate to be able to see the seven matariki stars shinning in the sky. We then had a shared breakfast with friends and whanau at school before we relaxed in the classroom before the rest of the class arrived later at school. during the day we created amazing art pictures that are to be displayed in our whare. Harko Brown came to school and shared some weaving, poi games and another game to strengthen our muscles and co-ordination in teams. Before our scrumptuous delicious shared lunch we each planted some trees and shrubs between our bike track and creek to encourage birds to visit our kura. As one of our pupils was going back to Europe, namely Germany, then Canada for a holiday, we enjoyed some yummy cupcakes that he and his Mum had made to celebrate his birthday that was on our Whanau Day.

One of the students in Te Moana, Imogen, chose to inquire about the Rocket launch at Mahia because someone very special to her was involved with it's launch.

Rocket Experiments

Imogen and I researched how we could launch our own rocket. We had to do a variety of experiments before our rocket actually launched. In the first experiment we put the lid on too tightly. In the second experiment we nearly drowned Shirley. In the third experiment the lid was too loose and the rocket only launched 30 cm off the ground. In our final experiment we learnt that you should not launch a rocket under a roof.
