Gala Day Video

W.A.L.T. create a video using trailer on our i-pad. We had to ensure that we spelt all our words correctly the first time as it is tricky and time wasting to correct them. We had some of our photos deleted about our Gala day which was really disappointing but any way our creative learning was more about the process rather than the final product. The most important thing was that our class learnt so much about creating products to sell for profit at our Gala. We made $670 which was FANTASTIC for our camp to Cooper's Beach later in the month.

We were asked to present assembly for the forth time this year. AJ and I (Nevaeh) volunteered to create the slide show and choose work we have completed lately to present to the audience at the end of the term. We learn so much speaking in front of an audience.

Choc and M and M Icecream

This week for reading our group (Kaitlin, Nevaeh and Zara) read a story about Joy Cowley who lives in an isolated area Seventy kilometres away from ice cream. Ice cream is one of her favourite treats so she has to make her own. We followed her recipe but chose to change the kiwi fruit for Chocolate and banana M and M's. Next time we will not add as many chips and M and M's and we'll make a triple batch so the whole class can have a taste.

            

Celebrations Inquiry -Independence Day-U.S.A.

Independence Day has special meaning for Nevaeh and Nikara so they chose to inquire about this celebration.

Collaboration with Te Awa

Room Te Awa (Year 1) and Te Moana (Year 4) work collaboratively throughout the day. Many of the older students support the teina to prepare for school, support them at play and lunch eating and play times. We also collaboratively read together as buddies, support each other during art, inquiry, wet lunch times, Physical Education as well as supporting the younger students to catch the bus each night.

Te Moana have special Reading Buddies in Te Awa. They establish their goals each session and read to each other in a teina/ tuakana relationship both learning from each other.

Nevaeh Knows the Surf Life Saving Rules

Surfing rules:

• Swim between the flags

    At patrolled beach surf life guards have checked the conditions and put the red and yellow flags in the safest place to swim and play.

• Have an adult to watch over you

Whenever your in water even in the shallow make sure you have adult supervision so the can help you be safe.

• Listen to the advice from super lifeguards

The surf lifeguards at the beach know all about it so if they give you instructions listen because there might be a storm or a tsunami or you might fall off the board in the deepness. And so you keep safe.

• Never swim or surf alone

When you head straight into the water make sure you have an adult with you at all times so if you drown the adult can save you.

• If in doubt stay out!

If you are at a beach without surf lifeguards and you don't feel comfortable going for a swim just stay out!!!!!!!!

• Be sunsmart

If you are at a beach with your parents and it is so hot and you forgot sunscreen just forget the water because it could cause painful sunburn.

• Learn to recognize rip currents

Rip currents at beaches are really dangerous! Rip currents can pull you back and you don't know were there going to take you. But there 100% dangerous. When you see a line through the sea don’t go near the water.

• Always use the correct and safe equipment

Making sure that you have the right equipment is important for any outdoor activities. If you are at the beach you need to make sure you use a boogie board with a leash and fins.                       

• Never swim when tired or cold   

If you are at the beach and you are tired or cold just don't head out into the surf. Being tired or cold means that you are less able to recognize dangers and keep yourself safe in the surf.

• Consider other surf users

When you are in the water you are usually around other people. It is important to watch out for others to keep you injury free and safe in surf

Nevaeh's Triathlon

                            The School Triathlon

On Friday we had a school Triathlon, it was really fun, I felt really  nervous. Once we got to the beach the water was a calm current. The trees danced on the minty grass. The sand was as yellow as the sun.

Some kids participated in the junior triathlon but most kids used their kaha

and went for the senior one. First the year 7’s & 8’s swam a distance long then it was year 6’s. Ready set GO! The year 5’s were so ready the had already been waiting at the starting line, on your marks get set GO! Oh no it’s te moana’s turn. ‘‘I  had butterflies in my stomach’’. On your marks get set  GO!  I heard lots of people especially my Mum could hear yelling go Nevaeh...

When we ran out of the water we walked across the crossing and sprinted along the path Jade and I were SO tired that we started walking after a while we got the hang of it so we jogged then ran then sprinted. When Jade and I arrived to the court we quickly put on our shoes and walked a bike around the corner. Fire Becks gave us instructions. I biked really quickly. We had to bike over the pump track, when I got back to the start I biked back over to the court so somebody else could use the bike that i was on. Mrs Neuman told us to grab our towels then sit down in front of the whare so we could watch the others bike around Moana participated in the juniors so that’s why we walked down to the school swimming pool. Te Moana kids finished then the ran then biked. It was an awesome day.  After a while Te Moana had lunch round the back of Room 1.

Next year, I so wish we could do it again.

Swim Safe Lesson 4

Swim Safe 4.

Today was our last day to have Tracy for Swim Safe. We knew we had to float on our backs for a long time, and to practise as if we have had an accident at sea in our bouncing boats.

The pool was as cold as ice cool beer. The pool was as smooth as paper. The pool was as clear as a ice cube.

We walked down to the pool to get changed. The sun was an orange balloon. The pool was as shiny as a brand new car.

We put our clothes that were as light as a feather then we carefully slid into the calm full water, but once they were wet they were as heavy as a rock. The pool was as blue as light blue dye. We were as calm as ever. We floated on our back, kicking like a motor, for  ten minutes, it was exhausting. Fear hit me as I was floating. The water was as clear as a ice cube. The sun was as bright as neon yellow.

    We learnt that clothes can be really dangerous to swim in or be wearing in water once they get very wet and weighty. My friends were frozen ice cubes but I wasn’t cold. Most of us were tough and just swam through the ice. Our faces were as red as if I had put red lipstick on my face. Nevaeh and I hoped out really fast before we got to the good bit. The good bit was when we quickly chucked on our light clothes, until… SPLASH some of us jumped in the pool that nobody even saw,  oh no! the clothes, they’re to heavy.

Goal: To tell a recount

On Wednesday I was so scared that it would rain so I thought to myself, HMMM? Maybe i should check the weather on the T.V? “Yes it’s not going to rain”!  This was at 5:00 in the morning i quickly got dressed the weather was as hot as a stove (sunny) when I arrived at school we had to get our things ready, When the bell rangwe all came back in class.

                Mrs Neuman said instead of carrying a big heavy bag maybe you could share a bag and have a buddy. My buddy was Lilli~Rose she was a fabulous buddy. As soon as room 4, 3, 2, 1, 0,  headed out of School Road some people were singing and skipping. Once we got there we had to be patient then we got in everybody was yelling I had to block my ears.

So we walked carefully walked over to the lunch table and we all had something to eat  at the end we had a swim it was Girls on the water slide first. Then the Boys on the water slide afterwards.

First I went on Jump over Sisi the Monster, it was awesome but it was most likely to rain because everything would be slippery it would be called the slippery slimy slide but that’s not what we want and then at then end I went on the fighting wall and that was the end of my Action World!

Nevaeh was the first pupil to create her Procedural text onto a slide show. Have fun following the instructions and flying your own plane.

Making Popcorn

W.A.L.T. write a procedural text and comment on the text so that we could modify the procedure if necessary.

• Dried corn kernels 
• Popcorn maker 
• Electricity
•  Measuring scoop
•  Lid 
• Bowls    

Steps:

• Plug in machine
•  Put 1 scoop of kernels in the machine 
• Put lid on. 
• Place catching bowl in front of the machine 
• Turn on machine
•  Be patient while it heats before popping 
• After it pops catch the popcorn in a bowl
•  Eat the popped corn 

Conclusion:

• Next time we need have chocolate popcorn as it was a bit dry.

Today we were learning to add a comment to our procedural text so that we may adjust the procedure if were to follow it again.

Indie commented-It was a bit dry so give it some flavour with caramel, butter or chocolate.

Jade, Franky, Mere and Jamie commented that the popcorn needed some butter to make it taste better.

Liam and Mere commented that we should have made rainbow popcorn.

Mikaila and Lilli-Rose commented that the popcorn needed some chocolate melted onto it.

Kingston commented that the popcorn tasted yummy and did not need any unhealthy stuff on it.

3D Hundertwasser Art

We used hundertwasser's   art forms as an  inspiration for our art works. We created 3D shape nets for geometry in mathematics, including cones, cylinders, cubes, rectangular and triangular prisms to add a 3D effect.

Our play that we are presenting to an audience starts when Aunt Amiria woke up Will and Katarina. It was a Matariki morning then suddenly Will and Katarina heard Aunt Amiria shout, “wake up you two, it’s time to get up.” Yawn!!!! “Why do we have to get up, it’s 4 hours before dawn.” “No, it’s not, it’s only 23 minutes before dawn.” “Put on your warm jumpers and come outside onto the beach.” “Can we make a sandcastle?” “ No!” “But look into the distance can you see the stars, if you can that would be Matariki.” “Wait Aunt Amiria we need to go wake up Mum & Koro or they won't get to see Matariki.” “O.K! we can take a picture for them, they are very very tired.” “ But we did not bring a camera.” “ Yes, I have one in my pocket.” “O.K. we can take lots and lots of pictures.”

Nevaeh's Speech-"Netball is Better Than Rugby"

Hi my name is Nevaeh and I’m Arguing that

         Netball is better than Rugby?    

Yes, I think netball is better than rugby because it is not messy at all.

Firstly, I think netball is way better than rugby because you don’t get hurt as much. There are so many accidents involving rugby players. Rugby is a brutal, violent, rough game. Rules do not change like rugby rules do. You can always tell if a goal is scored in netball--in rugby they always have to check.

Secondly, netball can be played inside or outside but rugby is just played outside and rugby can not be played on concrete or wooden floor.  Rugby needs to be played on a grass field because boys and men like to get dirty-they think they are tough and playing harder. Also men don’t clean up or do their own washing.

Thirdly, netball increases women’s participation in sport--Rugby doesn’t. It is a less violent game and the moral and self-esteem has been boosted by playing netball.

Fourthly rugby players could learn from netballers--the fast ball handling skills, decision making and the quick vision. Netball is played much quicker as you only have 3 seconds from the moment you catch the ball to releasing it. In netball you need short sharp movements going forwards, backwards, sideways, up and stopping.

Lastly netball is fun and rugby is boring. More people play netball than rugby so NETBALL just have to be better than rugby !!!!!!!!!!

Dear Matua,

Thank you for welcoming us to the Waitangi Treaty grounds, we all learnt a lot of information and knowledge. I was surprised about how long the waka was and how much people are allowed on it. I liked the commands that we did with the hoe. The games were awesome.  I loved the whare because the carving tell us all about all the maori stories and now we all know that the carvings aren't all the same. I loved the colours of the whare because it shows up really well. I hope we can do this again soon.
