Kaitlin Learn's about Surf Safety

We had the most amazing lessons with the surf life savers. I really learn so much more when I am able to do what I read and hear about. I now know how to help someone if they are having difficulty in the water as we practiced the skills with boards and tubes.

Surf
On Friday Te Moana walked with our buddies to the beach, mine was AJ. Mrs Neumann told us to put our bags in a row on the grass.

First we did some warm ups. Our first warm up was to save people from the other side with the tube. Then we swapped. For our next game we split up into our classes. We were with Sam, to survive in the game we had to have a piece of hose in our hand. I almost survived. After lunch we hopped in the water with Liam and Toobs. We learnt to save people with  red rose rings.
We had some lunch. Then we headed to the water, we got to have free time. In my free time I jumped off the boogie board. If we wanted to jump off the boogie boards. We had to find some people to hold it for us to jump. Then we went back to Sam and we had relay races  with the boogie boards we started with 1 then 2 at a time.
Mrs Neumann swapped with Mrs Davies we went back to class and we started to do some art about the surf safe. We could do a poster or a picture of the beach, flags and currents.

Beach Clean-Up
On Friday TE AWA & TE MOANA went to the beach.Mar 21, 2017 11:43:12 AM.jpg
The sand was as orange as an orange. The water sounded like a wild slushy maker slopping on the sand. We made sandcastles, ours wasn't the best 😈. Our sand castles were really petite  and small.

All of our sandcastles had something really unique ours was wide. It was small silly and spotless 💯 % sure. We went to get some decorative stuff but we didn't have enough time so I quickly put a pinecone on top.

Zara Learns from Real Life Guards

Safe Surfing.
Lifeguards: Toobs /tea, Liam/ coffee and Sam the ice-cream man.
We walked to the beach to do surf life saving with real life guards.
They were as tanned as coffee. Liam  is from Auckland, Toobs  is from California and Sam is  from Raglan.
When we were at the beach we had to take our clothes off  but we had  togs underneath . We did some relay races with real,  red, rosy  rings. They were called angel rings.
We had ten people in one group we had 4 angel rings at the end of  the beach we ran to the angel rings, then we picked them up  we turned around 3 times then run back.  Our class  had to get in the water and high five one of the adults in the water. Then we kept on repeating what we did.

Nevaeh Knows the Surf Life Saving Rules

                     Surf Life Saving
Surfing rules:
  • Swim between the flags
At patrolled beach surf life guards have checked the conditions and put the red and yellow flags in the safest place to swim and play.

  • Have an adult to watch over you
Whenever your in water even in the shallow make sure you have adult supervision so the can help you be safe.

  • Listen to the advice from super lifeguards
The surf lifeguards at the beach know all about it so if they give you instructions listen because there might be a storm or a tsunami or you might fall off the board in the deepness. And so you keep safe.
  • Never swim or surf alone
When you head straight into the water make sure you have an adult with you at all times so if you drown the adult can save you.

  • If in doubt stay out!
If you are at a beach without surf lifeguards and you don't feel comfortable going for a swim just stay out!!!!!!!!
  • Be sunsmart
If you are at a beach with your parents and it is so hot and you forgot sunscreen just forget the water because it could cause painful sunburn.

  • Learn to recognize rip currents
Rip currents at beaches are really dangerous! Rip currents can pull you back and you don't know were there going to take you. But there 100% dangerous. When you see a line through the sea don’t go near the water.

  • Always use the correct and safe equipment
Making sure that you have the right equipment is important for any outdoor activities. If you are at the beach you need to make sure you use a boogie board with a leash and fins.

  • Never swim when tired or cold
If you are at the beach and you are tired or cold just don't head out into the surf. Being tired or cold means that you are less able to recognize dangers and keep yourself safe in the surf.

  • Consider other surf users
When you are in the water you are usually around other people. It is important to watch out for others to keep you injury free and safe in surf

Nikara attends Surf Safe Lessons

           Surf Life Saving
On Friday the 13th of March, everyone in Te Moana and Te Maunga slowly went down to the beach. We went to go see three young men that taught Paihia School about surf safe.  Their names were Sam,Toobs and Liam. We have nicknames for them. Sam’s nickname is ice cream because when he is being a life saver he get too hot and he wants a ice cream. Toobs name is tea cause he loves tea.Last but not least Liam likes coffee so his nickname is coffee.
Firstly we sat down quietly down on the  soft grass while all three lifeguards told us really, really, really good rules that we had to listen to them when we are playing down on the beach.
Secondly we walked down as fast as a cat walking out of a door. Then Liam said, “Can you split into your classrooms please,” and we split straight away. The first game we played was with four leaders and then Liam put us into a group. I was in group 3 and Zara was in group 2. My leader was Franky.
This is how we played we split our groups in half. One half of the group went down to the other end of the beach where Sam and Toobs were. We played  someone rescued us and pulled us back like we are in the water.
Thirdly Sam got the parents to go into the water. The second game we played was we had to put our legs together and put our hand on top of each other and Sam would say, “head up or head down.” Then he would say “GO!” and then we would go and grab a piece of cut hose every time. Only once I didn’t and then some other kids didn’t.Then we watched them and we set out the pieces of cut hose.
Fourthly we had morning tea. For lunch I had some fruit and a half a  slice of my sandwich. Then we went back to Sam he said we are going to swim and high fived an adult and swim back. Then the next kid will go.
Later we went to Toobs and got into a group of 4. My group was Zara, Imogen, and Angela. Zara and I would go in then would go out into the water and pretend that we are pretending to drown. It was such a good day and we learnt so much.

Mikaila Learns about Safe Surfing

Surf Life Saving
On Friday Te moana and Te maunga travelled to the beach. We saw all of the surf life saving instructors getting the adults into the water. As it was so hot we needed to have a drink of water.  But when I got into the sea “Water!” I shouted to my teacher. I  said, “I was as warm as a spa bath.”
And I felt like I was the only one who was doing the activities, then I saw Jade spinning the surf lifeguards safety boards. When I asked sam if I could go and join group two, he said, “No!” I even felt like I was burning hot just like the steaming kettle but hotter than the sun.
After we had a swim we played a game of octopus and I tagged my friends, and I also  tagged lots of kids from Te Maunga. Once I jumped into the water I splashed a huge as wave onto the teacher. Quickly I said, “Sorry!” so quickly so I could keep practising saving people.
At the end of surf life saving we all had to shout out “Thank you!!!” that was when my ears popped. I was so pleased to having such a fun day knowing how to save people’s lives.

Mikaila's Triathlon

Our School Triathlon

On Friday I felt like I was the only one there, but when my ears popped because Mrs Williams Banged the two blocks together and that was when I knew when to go and run into the  seawater. Before we ran into the water we had to run in and then drop to the floor and then swim to the woman. We had to swim in the deep end and the little kids had to swim to the lady who was in the shallow so they don't  drown in the deep water.

After we had our swim we had to run back to school and find the right sized bike for you and then we had to find the safe side for you need to walk your bike on. Because there was a huge truck on the side we needed to walk on.  So we needed to go the other side on the road to find our bike. When I got to the finish line Ms Hadwin gave me a chocolate bar from out of her box. When I asked her if there was another one, she said, “No, because there will be not enough for everyone else!” Once I finished everything else I got told to sit on the school deck so we could warm up. So  then Mrs Neumann told us girls kids to go and get dressed in room one.

                 School Triathlon.

We had to run one time around the field we ran like a cheetahs. We ran  to the Bikes. We were going to go around one time as well  we were riding on the bikes I was the first one off the Bikes.
We were so hungry we had a quick Chocolate bar. We had lots of fun.It was the best day ever. I was never tired in it. I was the first one in all of them. We were going to have lunch.
When we were finished our lunch we had a ice cream on a stick and a normal ice block. They were a treat after our Triathlon it was so yummy. After our ice blocks we had a play we had so much fun. I had too much fun at the Triathlon. We were so happy to have a ice block. I was lucky I won, it we were so tired.
I was as happy as a baby girl.It was as amazing as riding on a ferris wheel I wanted to stay at the Triathlon I really liked it I did not want to stop the Triathlon because it was so much fun for me.

On Friday Te Moana and Te Maunga met  each  other on  the library steps. Then we buddied up. I was with Kaitlin. We all walked down to the beach. “Put your bag in a row on the grass with your buddy” Mrs Neumann said.
We all sat down on the grass by our bags. The lifeguards  were Liam, Sam and Toobs. They  asked us some questions. Then we split into five groups of ten. Each team got a red tube. Five people ran down to the other end of the beach.  The  leader from our group ran down to the other end where the kids in our group were waiting. They put the tube around us and clicked the heavy metal buckle back around us and ran back to our group. The water danced in the sun light. Real red ring.
After that we  had morning tea. We fniished our morning tea, it was time to get into the water. One of the games  was the boogie board race. Nikara and I were the leader in the boogie board race, we raced together and had a tie. After everybody had a turn we went in two’s. When we were in it was Jade and I against Nikara and Breeze. Then it was time to go.“ Bye ” said Room Te Moana.

Harlem's Lucky Find when cleaning the beach

Beach Clean up Day.

On Friday Room 0 and 4 did Beach clean up we walked past the leafy lifey leaves and past the big enormous bus.  When we got to the beach the sand was as hot as a furnace.  The water shone like glitter.
The cruise boat was big as a elephant. The green grazed grass was as spiky as a mohawk. Wet stinky, smelly,
slithery sand was under our feet. The noisy blazing helicopter! was ruining our ears.

Jahrell brought his cool toys so when we got to the beach we could play. We had to line up to go back to school when we got back we had lunch. Jahrell, Dale and I went to go play, we mixed the toys up and put different body parts on them. When bell ran we rushed back to class, we did some writing and some reading and maths. It was exciting to do the beach clean up and I hope we do that again and I hope we get more stuff next time and
do another competition with each other. I hope
everybody else and I will find some more cool stuff
like I did  on the grass. I found  a shiny necklace that I picked up from the ground, I didn’t know whose it was so I gave it to Miss Simmonds and she said to me, “ After school I’ll take this to the police station” and I said, “O.K.!” And then we had assembly it was Te Ngahere’s turn, then when the bell ran we packed up and did our lucky dip before we went home.
Finally we packed our bags and went home to have a rest
and a restful weekend at home with our parents. Hopefully we’ll do awesome stuff with our parents and have a great day with everybody else’s family and friends.

Harlem's First Tryathlon

  Tryathlon Day
On Friday we had a school tryathlon, first we had to swim across the beach  we ran to Rachel the water was cold as a bucket of ice and I swam like a shark. Then we swam to Stef , next  we also  swam to Cam before we  ran  out of the water I was as slow as sloth. The sand was warm as a blanket, I  was exhausted,  I couldn't run,  but my Father cheered me up it sound like he said,  “ Come on son, pick up your hoe  of  Kaha !”,  but  I couldn’t  so  ran as fast as I could.   Once I picked up my bike I zoomed off, like a boss. Jade was in front, I was so tired but I told myself ,come on Harlem, pump those legs. I changed gears that made me more tired so I changed back to one, and then I got to Shirley.                                                             Then  we went on the pump track, when I got to the other side
my dad was cheering to me, so when  I was  on my second
lap  I went over to Shirley she told me, “ When you get to Mrs Cameron, go  past the cone , then when I crossed the finish
line Ms Hadwin gave  me a choc muesli bar.  Slowly I walked back to the court, I was impressed with myself because it was my first time doing a school triathlon and it was best day I’ve had in life.
Next week in the weetbix tryathlon I would try to be the best I can do, but I hope that I have so much fun in the weetbix tryathlon.  I’ll try my hardest to work my way to get a medal . Te Moana ended the day with their assembly I told  everyone  to have a lovely weekend and do some reading, writing and maths.
Also do some  homework and hope you have a restful weekend
nd a playful weekend  and also eat your weetbix.
To conclude I hope that we do, a school tryathlon
again  some time soon and the weetbix tryathlon I  hope  it is fun  and  cool prize and activities and I hope I  win a  cool prize.

Harlem's Thank you card to Our Surf Life Savers

Today we learnt how to make cards using Google Slides. I had to insert photos and be very careful how I set up the layout for my card so that we could print it correctly.

Zara's Triathlon

              Triathlon Day
On friday it was triathlon day I felt like a sun..
Firstly I had to go to Te - Awa / room zero and wait for so long it was so hot I almost died of hotness. Ataahua, Mark, Nikara, and I were in room Zero. It was as hot as a spa.
We went to watch the big kids come in from there swim at the beach, we waited there for so long to. Nikara and I were sweating to death. The triathlon was tiring tough and terrific.
We then traveled from room 0 to room 2, 3,  4 and 5.
We went down to the pool and lined up at the pool gate. Nikara, Mark, Ataahua and I were sadly last in the swimming. Ataahua was the first out in swimming I was last out but I did not care. on the running & biking I was first out of my team out of the biggys. We were in the juniors because  we did not bring our permission slip back to school but the teachers wanted us to participate in the triathlon. After that we did running I was feeling weird because we ran straight after swimming. For running we went around the playground on to the pump track and  ran on the left side then we ran around the field were  the bikes were then we hopped on our bikes and rode the same way as we ran then we we biked through the goal post and collected a museli bar.
On the running and biking I was first out of my team out of the   biggys. We then went up to our class then the bell rang we ate our lunch then we got a ice block, mine was delish. It was yellow blue and white. It was really  fun.

Vaughan's Trathlon

The Triathlon
The girls were cheering for me when I came out of the water.                                                 In the triathlon I swam as fast as a crocodile and I beat Calais and Harlem. I ran as fast as a cheetah on my legs. I felt a bit creeped out at  the start. We had ice cream.

                            The School Triathlon

On Friday we had a school Triathlon, it was really fun, I felt really  nervous. Once we got to the beach the water was a calm current. The trees danced on the minty grass. The sand was as yellow as the sun.

Some kids participated in the junior triathlon but most kids used their kaha
and went for the senior one. First the year 7’s & 8’s swam a distance long then it was year 6’s. Ready set GO! The year 5’s were so ready the had already been waiting at the starting line, on your marks get set GO! Oh no it’s te moana’s turn. ‘‘I  had butterflies in my stomach’’. On your marks get set  GO!  I heard lots of people especially my Mum could hear yelling go Nevaeh...

When we ran out of the water we walked across the crossing and sprinted along the path Jade and I were SO tired that we started walking after a while we got the hang of it so we jogged then ran then sprinted. When Jade and I arrived to the court we quickly put on our shoes and walked a bike around the corner. Fire Becks gave us instructions. I biked really quickly. We had to bike over the pump track, when I got back to the start I biked back over to the court so somebody else could use the bike that i was on. Mrs Neuman told us to grab our towels then sit down in front of the whare so we could watch the others bike around Moana participated in the juniors so that’s why we walked down to the school swimming pool. Te Moana kids finished then the ran then biked. It was an awesome day.  After a while Te Moana had lunch round the back of Room 1.
Next year, I so wish we could do it again.
